Dr. Abdul Qadeer, also known as the “Father of Pakistan’s Atomic Weapons Program,” was a Pakistani nuclear physicist and metallurgical engineer. He was revered as a National Hero for turning Pakistan into the first Islamic nuclear power state in the world.
Dr. Khan had been placed under house arrest since 2004 after singing a confession for selling nuclear secrets to Iran and North Korea. However, in February 2009, Pakistan lifted most restrictions on Dr. Khan after the accusation against him could not be proven.
Illness and Death
After testing positive for Covid-19, the health of Abdul Qadeer Khan, Pakistan’s nuclear power founder, began to deteriorate on Saturday night, and he was taken to the KRL hospital in an ambulance on early Sunday morning.
He experienced discomfort in breathing and his health worsened as his lungs started bleeding. Doctors tried everything they could do to save Khan’s life, but, Khan, 85, passed away as his lungs collapsed at 7:04 am.
Funeral and Burial
Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al Ghazali led the funeral prayers at the Capital’s Faisal Mosque. A large number of people attended the funeral prayers, including cabinet members, parliamentarians, and the military leadership.
Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed said that Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan will be buried at the H-8 graveyard, by following his wish. He further said that a grave had previously been prepared at the Faisal Mosque premises “but now, in accordance with his will”, he was buried at the H-8 graveyard.
