PTI Faces Setback After Failed Islamabad Protest; Future Strategy in Question

PTI Faces Setback After Failed Islamabad Protest, Future Strategy in Question. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) suffered a significant blow to its political strategy after its latest protest in Islamabad ended abruptly following a security crackdown. The rally, which aimed to press for the release of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and other PTI demands, was dispersed by security forces early on Tuesday morning.

The operation led to clashes, with conflicting reports on casualties—PTI claimed eight supporters were killed, while the government denied using live ammunition and confirmed the deaths of three rangers and a police constable.

The protest was part of PTI’s ongoing campaign since Khan’s ousting in April 2022, which saw rallies in support of his claims of a “stolen mandate” in the February elections. However, the Islamabad protest collapsed within 24 hours, with key PTI figures like Bushra Bibi and Ali Amin Gandapur fleeing the city under cover of darkness, leaving supporters behind. PTI later called off the protest.

Analysts argue that this setback highlights PTI’s lack of effective leadership and strategy. The party’s reliance on social media for mobilization faltered when faced with the reality of organizing on the ground. The abrupt departure of party leaders has further deepened divisions within PTI, with critics questioning the party’s ability to regroup.

While PTI leader Gandapur condemned the government’s crackdown, analysts suggest that the party now faces a crossroads. To remain relevant, PTI may need to build alliances with other political factions and shift towards a broader, more unified protest platform focused on social and human rights issues. However, with Khan still incarcerated and ongoing tensions with the government, PTI’s future actions remain uncertain.

The government, meanwhile, defended its response, claiming that PTI’s protest was violent and violated court orders. Despite accusations of excessive force, the government’s heavy-handed tactics could backfire, potentially undermining its legitimacy. Political observers suggest that the ongoing unrest could fuel further discontent, especially given allegations of election rigging and the government’s unpopularity.
