Utah Governor Spencer Cox shared that a family member told police Robinson had recently spoken about Kirk’s upcoming appearance. The relative also mentioned discussions about disliking Kirk’s political views.
Police later discovered bullet casings with engraved anti-fascist messages near the suspected murder weapon. They believe the suspect had become more politically active in recent years.
Robinson’s Arrest & Background
Robinson was arrested Thursday night after a family friend contacted law enforcement, saying Robinson had either confessed or strongly implied his involvement in the shooting. He was taken into custody without resistance.
Police later found his gray Dodge Challenger—the car believed to have transported him to the scene—parked outside his parents’ home in Washington, Utah, a town of about 28,000 residents near Zion National Park.
As reporters and police gathered outside the house on Friday, neighbors described the Robinson family as quiet and well-regarded. One neighbor, Steven Green, said they attended the same Mormon church. “Great family, good kids,” he said, though he admitted he didn’t know Tyler well.
A Promising Start in Life
Robinson graduated from Pine View High School in 2021. A video from the ceremony shows him walking proudly across the stage as the crowd cheered. He enrolled at Utah State University that fall but left after one semester for reasons still unclear.
Currently, Robinson is a third-year student at Dixie Technical College, pursuing an electrical apprenticeship. According to voter records, he is registered but listed as “inactive,” meaning he did not vote in the last presidential election.
His mother’s deleted Facebook posts painted a picture of a loving, middle-class family. She often shared updates about school events, holidays, and vacations. While a few posts showed the family handling guns, none contained overt political messages.
Legal Proceedings & Next Steps
Robinson has no prior criminal record. Authorities charged him with aggravated murder and other offenses. As of now, he remains in custody at the Utah County Jail in Spanish Fork, about 12 miles south of the shooting site.
His arrest ended a 33-hour manhunt that had included the detention of two other individuals, both later released. Robinson has yet to be formally charged in court.
