China’s J-35A Fighter Marks Major Leap in Airpower

China’s J-35A Fighter Marks Major Leap in Airpower. China’s new J-35A stealth fighter marks a significant step forward in Beijing’s airpower ambitions, building upon the FC-31 prototype and designed for both carrier and land-based operations.

The J-35A is a carrier-based fighter that traces its roots to the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation’s FC-31, which first flew in 2012 as a stealth export fighter.

Over the years, it evolved into the J-35 as a test platform for a carrier-based fighter, with the first J-35A variant taking flight about a decade later. This version features optimized landing gear and folding wings for tight storage and demanding landings on aircraft carriers, while a land-based version of the aircraft, the J-35A, has been tailored for Air Force operations.

One of the most notable aspects of the J-35A is its similarity to the American F-35 fighter, with both sharing comparable stealth contouring, dual engines, and radar-absorbing materials. This resemblance has sparked accusations of espionage, though experts argue that such similarities could be attributed to functional convergence in stealth technology, rather than outright espionage.

However, analysts acknowledge that while espionage may have played a role in certain aspects of the program, the J-35’s design likely stems from the pursuit of similar functional goals in creating a capable stealth fighter.

While the J-35A is still in the early stages of its production and has not yet entered active service, it offers China an opportunity to field a more affordable stealth fighter.

Unlike the mass-produced F-35, which benefits from a robust global logistics network due to its international partnerships, the J-35A lacks such a system, making its long-term impact uncertain. The F-35 has already entered mass production with three variants and provides greater mission flexibility, meeting the diverse needs of the U.S. military. In contrast, the J-35A’s flexibility is somewhat limited at this stage.

China’s move to develop multiple stealth aircraft, including the J-35A and the J-20 stealth fighter, places the country among a select group of nations that have produced more than one viable stealth aircraft, further solidifying its ambitions for air superiority in the Indo-Pacific region.

While the J-35A is not yet a direct rival to the F-35, its development signals China’s growing capabilities in advanced air technology and its commitment to strengthening its military presence on the global stage. The aircraft’s potential performance remains unclear, but it represents a major leap in China’s pursuit of stealth airpower, and its development is closely watched by military analysts worldwide.
