Pakistan can earn millions of dollars through Himalayan Pink Salt. The salt mined from the famous Khewra mines is very unique. It is portrayed as one of the purest and most expensive salts in the world. Due to its amazing benefits, it is being utilized all over the world as specialty foods. It is in aerated water bath treatments, and even home decoration.
Besides that, due to its use in the health sector, it is also an important part for different religious activities especially in Hinduism. India is getting this salt from Pakistan on very cheap rates. For instance, in 2016 India bought 625 metric tons of pink salt from Pakistan. It was at a price of Rs2.98 per kg. However, India exported 15.09562 metric tons salt to Korea, US, UAE, Canada, Somalia and Spain with its own wrapping and product name. India makes multiple other products from Pakistani Himalayan salt. And then, sells it to rest of the world. The Himalayan Pink Salt is also being sold by Israel and France as their product.

Pakistan’s Rights for Himalayan Pink Salt

The Himalayan Pink Salt is processed and packed after being imported from Pakistan at very cheap price. It is selling at Amazon for $26.40 per 400grams which is approximately about Rs. 8000/kg.
After acquiring trademark rights for Basmati rice, Pakistani officials are now set to register pink salt to prevent the misuse of the product by other countries and accrue revenue.
Pakistan’s commerce ministry officials have decided to register the pink rock salt on a fast-track basis. The registration of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for local products “will serve as a potential economic tool to promote and enhance national and international trade of Pakistan” and earn revenue, Commerce Adviser Abdul Razak Dawood said.

The move is aimed at curbing unauthorized use of Pakistan’s indigenous products by other countries. The trademark will encourage producers to promote ‘Made in Pakistan’ products globally and expand their businesses, the advisor said. Pakistan’s commerce ministry is also preparing a list of other products for registration on a priority basis and has asked the business community to identify other products to be registered.
