The tenure of the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army is for 5 years from now onwards. Earlier, the tenure of the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army was for 3 years. However, an extension could be given for a period of another 3 years which would make the entire tenure of the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army at 6 years.
General Asim Munir to Retire in 2027 as Pakistan’s Parliament has passed a bill amending the appointment of Services Chiefs. General Asim Munir was appointed as Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army on November 29, 2022 for a period of 3 years. On appointment, his tenure was ending on November 28, 2025. However, the new amendment in the Army Act will grant an automatic extension to General Asim Munir.
The bill amends the appointment, tenure, extension and term of the Services Chiefs of all Armed Forces. The bill refers to changes for Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief of Air Staff. These appointments mark appointing the Chiefs for Pakistan’s Army, Navy and Air Force.
“The purpose of these amendments are to make consistent the Pakistan Army Act, 1952, The Pakistan Navy Ordinance, 1961 and The Pakistan Air Force Act, 1953 with the maximum tenure of the Chief of the Army Staff, the Chief of the Naval Staff and the Chief of the Air Staff and to make consequential amendments for uniformity in the aforementioned laws,” the bill states.
Interestingly, there is no change in the appointment of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. The Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee is also an important pillar within the structure of Services Chiefs. The Office is mostly involved in Joint Staff activities, mainly between all the three forces of Pakistan. Therefore, the bill remains silent on the tenure of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. However, the tenures of all three services chiefs have been extended.
